Kelvin truck

Prior to hitting the streets full time on April 1st, Kelvin Natural Slush, the 2010 Vendy Award Winner in the Dessert Category, will be out tomorrow (Sun) to help benefit Japan.

They will be on 5th Ave & 22nd street from noon until they run out.  Not only can you pay what you want for any Kelvin Slush, but 100% of all proceeds collected will be donated to the Red Cross Japan Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami Fund.

Thank you Kelvin. Very nice indeed.

Here’s a picture of a ginger slush with fresh mint that we had last year. Delicious!

NYC FOOD TRUCKS HELPING JAPAN

A few NYC food trucks are stepping up to help the Japanese people who were devastated by the recent earthquake and tsunami, and we hope even more will join this greatly-needed effort.

Last Friday, Big D’s Grub Truck donated 10% of its proceeds from the day to Doctors Without Borders, who are currently in Japan helping victims there.

Yesterday, Kelvin Slush came out before their official April 1st re-opening to help the people of Japan.  They told people to pay what they want, and donated 100% of the proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross.  Kelvin told us they raised around $1,800 from this effort.  It may not sound like much, but if everyone would donate what they can afford, it will add up quickly.

Today, Big D’s Grub Truck is going to continue their fund raising effort by offering free “Hope Flan”, delicious home made flan made by Big D’s friend Brenda.  The suggested donation for Hope Flan is $3 or more, and 100% of Hope Flan proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.  They will be on 40th St & 6th Ave today.

Thank you Kelvin and Big D.  We hope that many other food trucks follow your very thoughtful lead.

NYSF NEW TRUCK ALERT: NOW EAT THIS! BY ROCCO DISPIRITO

We received a tip from NYSF reader Becky Ann about a new food truck she saw on Hudson St in the West Village called Now Eat This!  It turns out this is the new food truck from Chef Rocco DiSpirito.

We heard the Marrakech Chefs truck was bought by Rocco DiSpirito.  Now we know what he’s doing with it.

Far from being a vanity project, the mission of Now Eat This! is to educate children about healthy eating and cooking.

We haven’t tried the food yet, but they tweeted “when you buy lunch from Now Eat This!, you also buy lunch for a kid.”  Sounds Like a very good cause.

Now Eat This! has only been on the street since Monday, and their menu on Day 2 was chicken noodle soup, Mama’s meatballs, enchiladas and brownie cupcakes.

If you try the food before we do, let us know how you like it, although supporting food education for children is more important than whether lunch is good or great.

You can find Now Eat This! on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed here.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way that you could eat street food and help the environment at the same time.  Today there is.

The Cinnamon Snail will be donating 20% of their sales to EarthShareNY today to support environmental conservation.

They will be parked on 55th and Broadway until 3:00pm so have lunch, a donut, and help the environment at the same time.
